David Hamilton

David works, where possible, in locally sourced wood - sometimes wood that he has felled himself - and turns it into, among other things, musical instruments and traditional wooden boxes and chests.

"I make boxes and small pieces of furniture using timbers selected for their natural grain and colour.  I have always been attracted to the richness and beauty of our native hardwoods from trees such as oak and ash but choose woods from all over the world for specific qualities.

"My most satisfying projects used timber from a sycamore tree that I felled, sawed into rough boards, then, after seasoning for two years, worked into small boxes with hinged lids.  All timber dries or takes up moisture causing small changes in size and shape and these must be accommodated in the design of the object and the conditioning of the raw material.

"By studying traditional objects like the Scots Kist (money chest) a more personal design has evolved where the original brass hardware is replaced with wooden versions in a contrasting timber to the carcass.

"This year's designs are my versions of Shaker oval boxes originally made by the North American religious sect that prized functionality over ornamentation.  The versatility of timber has inspired me to make a wide range of pieces from games to musical instruments where strength and proportion are carefully balanced.

"I start all commissions with approval of drawings and may need more time if a particular wood is required."
