New Form Arts Members Galleries Norman KellyNorman raises calligraphy to the art form it truly is and, among other things, has been commissioned to create a series of maps and guides for Ribble Valley walks.
"I enjoy the medium of calligraphy because it can be applied in many different ways. From the traditional use of lettering that has spanned thousands of years, to moulding the letterforms to create a more expressive and colourful mood.
"I had long been interested in calligraphy and when I settled in the Ribble Valley ten years ago, I discovered the East Lancs Calligraphers Guild. I acquired new techniques and applications through their classes and workshops. I was also encouraged to exhibit works and demonstrate calligraphy. The guild was fortunate to obtain the Platform gallery as a venue for its 10th anniversary exhibition. Since then I have successfully exhibited at the gallery on a number of occasions and, through this obtained local commissions. "More recently I have started writing longer poems in book form. This overcomes the problems of limiting the amount of text used when doing a piece for hanging. Not only is this a satisfying process but it also takes the art back to its origins - producing hand written books. "Calligraphy is not as well represented, in relation to other wall-hung art forms, as it deserves. I feel that its versatility lends it to a wider audience, and it is my aim to promote calligraphy as an equal to paintings and prints."
